It is a very common phenomenon that wisdom teeth cannot erupt or fully grow in because there isn’t enough space. In such cases, the tooth remaining under the gum can often cause inflammation and severe wisdom tooth pain.
Sometimes, a wisdom tooth may erupt but not correctly. For example, if it emerges at an improper angle, it can push and crowd other teeth, leading to discomfort.
It is also problematic if the wisdom tooth does not touch the tooth in front of it, creating a larger gap between the two teeth. In such cases, cleaning becomes almost impossible, leading to dental problems like tartar buildup or tooth decay. Recurring wisdom tooth inflammation can even lead to cyst formation in the long term.
If any of the problems described above occur, it is advisable to have the wisdom tooth removed. Of course, there are cases where it might be considered to treat the issues around the wisdom tooth – if possible – but this is a rare exception.
In most cases, wisdom tooth removal is the correct decision to alleviate often painful symptoms, continuous inflammation, and to protect other teeth. Surgical removal is particularly common for lower wisdom teeth.
There are two ways to remove a wisdom tooth. One method is simple extraction, also known as wisdom tooth pulling, while the other requires surgical exposure, which we call wisdom tooth surgery. Whichever is necessary in a given case, there is no need to fear it, as both procedures are performed under local anesthesia.
Your treating dentist will, of course, determine which procedure is needed. A panoramic X-ray is a great help for this, serving as the first step in every procedure. It perfectly shows where and how the tooth is positioned. The choice of treatment depends on the position of the teeth, the bone structure around the wisdom tooth, and the course of the roots.
If the crown of the tooth has already erupted, surgery is usually not necessary, especially for upper wisdom teeth. In such cases, after administering the anesthetic, the wisdom tooth extraction can be completed in just a few minutes.
Even if your dentist decides that surgical removal will be necessary, there’s no need to be alarmed. Thanks to our well-equipped clinic, expertise, and anesthesia, you don’t have to worry about pain or significant discomfort.
Following surgical exposure, upper wisdom tooth removal can usually be done in one piece. However, the situation can be a bit more complicated with lower wisdom teeth, so this procedure might take a little longer. The incision made in the gum allows the dentist to access the tooth, but often a special bone-milling drill is also needed.
To facilitate faster tooth removal, it may be necessary to divide the tooth into several smaller pieces within the bone and then remove them. At the end of the surgery, the wound edges are closed with sutures.
It is always advisable to follow all the advice and instructions provided by your dentist. Often, a course of antibiotics is needed after the procedure, and it is crucial to take the prescribed amount for the full duration.
It is very important to rest as much as possible in the days following the procedure. Avoid sports and heavy physical work, do not bend over, and delegate household chores to others. This is also not the time for hot baths or saunas.
Do not rinse, suck, or poke the wound! However, increased attention to oral hygiene is necessary, but only a soft toothbrush should be used for this.
Adhering to eating and drinking rules is also essential: avoid dairy products, carbonated, and alcoholic beverages, and do not eat or drink anything while you still feel the effects of the anesthetic.
After wisdom tooth extraction, you can expect some bleeding and pain. Many ask: how long does the pain last after wisdom tooth extraction? Mild pain and swelling are natural for 2–3 days; after lower wisdom tooth surgery, this can last longer.
For the latter, however, common painkillers are sufficient. It is also possible for your face to swell, which can be alleviated with cold compresses. In case of purplish spots, you can use comfrey cream. If trismus (lockjaw) occurs, gently massaging the jaw can help resolve it.
