Our gums play an extremely multifaceted role in maintaining the health of our mouth. Firstly, they protect the bone structure and the cervical areas of the teeth from mechanical, chemical, and thermal effects. Secondly, they provide protection against pathogens. They surround and stabilize the teeth. In addition, they naturally play an aesthetic role. Therefore, it is very important to intervene immediately if something is wrong with them.
When the gum leaves the tooth root exposed, this area becomes sensitive to many external stimuli, whether it’s cold or hot foods and drinks, or sour or sweet tastes. In addition, unpleasant symptoms such as gum bleeding, cervical pain, and gum inflammation can occur. Furthermore, bone loss can develop, and the tooth may even shift.
Among the many discomforts, the aesthetic aspect cannot be overlooked. Our smile will no longer be natural, and the tooth root will become increasingly visible. Another phenomenon that also poses an aesthetic problem is the gummy smile. Gingivoplasty simultaneously combats both pain-generating problems and those that overshadow a decorative smile.
With gingivoplasty, the exposed root surface is re-covered, eliminating sensitivity and preventing further deterioration.
Gingivoplasty can play a key role in eliminating cervical sensitivity. In such cases, the problem can be caused by periodontal disease, or even trauma or improper brushing technique.
A gummy smile is primarily an aesthetic problem, as not only the teeth but also the gums are visible when smiling. This can be corrected with gingivoplasty, resulting in a more harmonious smile.
Sensitivity caused by an exposed root surface can be effectively treated by rebuilding the gum.
Gingivoplasty can play a key role in eliminating cervical sensitivity. In such cases, the problem can be caused by periodontal disease, but it can also occur when the area is subjected to some trauma. Unfortunately, this can also happen if we clean our teeth with an unsuitable tool or incorrectly.
Since the root surface remains unprotected due to gum recession, the phenomenon may be accompanied by pain, gum bleeding, and swelling. Whatever treatment we apply to remedy the painful problems, it is also advisable to eliminate gum recession with surgical correction.
With gingivoplasty, the exposed root surface is re-covered. The treatment can also prevent further gum deterioration and all its negative consequences. Of course, every case is different, as the outcome of gingivoplasty is greatly influenced by the condition of the bone around the tooth and the extent and depth of the gum recession.
If circumstances allow, a complete coverage can be achieved, but if the damage is more extensive, partial coverage can be achieved. Even in the latter case, there is significant improvement in all respects, so it is definitely worth pursuing.
A gummy smile is primarily an aesthetic problem, as not only the upper teeth but also a disturbing amount of the gums are visible when smiling. If the gum is fundamentally healthy, this can be easily corrected with gingivoplasty.
Naturally, this requires an individual consultation, an assessment of the condition, and a panoramic X-ray, which shows how much gum can be safely removed from the teeth. The end result will definitely be a beautiful, aesthetic smile.
The first step of the procedure is always anesthesia. This is followed by flap creation, which is possible using various graft materials. On the one hand, it is possible to use the patient’s own gum tissue if it can be harvested from the palate or the area behind the wisdom teeth. In this case, the selected area receives a wound dressing at the end of the procedure. However, if this is not possible, gingivoplasty is performed using animal-derived collagen matrices. After placement, the flap is then secured with fine sutures.
Until suture removal, which usually takes 2 weeks after the plastic surgery, it is strictly forbidden to clean the area with a toothbrush. We must avoid consuming spicy, hot, hard, or very hot foods and drinks. It is advisable to rest as much as possible and avoid strenuous activities during this time. It is very important to refrain from smoking for successful healing.
If we feel it is necessary, we can take painkillers or ice the affected area with a cold pack. It is also possible that our treating physician may prescribe an antibiotic course. In such cases, it is crucial to follow all instructions!
The true final result will be visible in the mirror in approximately 3-6 months, as this much time is needed for tissue maturation, depending on the individual.
Gingivoplasty is an intervention of paramount importance not only from an aesthetic but also from a health perspective.
